Three Technologies, Different Strengths
Flow meter selection isn't one-size-fits-all — the right technology depends on your fluid's conductivity, pipe access, budget, and required accuracy. Here's how the three most common types used in water and wastewater applications compare.
Electromagnetic Flow Meters
Uses Faraday's law of induction — requires the fluid to be electrically conductive (minimum ~5 µS/cm). No moving parts, minimal pressure drop, and very high accuracy.
- Accuracy: ±0.5% — among the best available
- Works with: Water, wastewater, effluent, most conductive liquids — not oils, hydrocarbons, or pure/demineralised water
- Installation: In-line (requires cutting the pipe), full-bore, needs the pipe to run full
- Best for: STP/ETP inlet-outlet compliance metering, RO permeate lines, general water/wastewater billing
Ultrasonic Flow Meters
Measures flow using the transit-time difference of ultrasonic pulses sent with and against the flow direction. Available in both clamp-on (non-invasive) and in-line versions.
- Accuracy: ±1–2% (clamp-on), ±0.5–1% (in-line)
- Works with: Clean and moderately turbid liquids; clamp-on versions struggle with very high solids content or entrained air/bubbles
- Installation: Clamp-on versions require no pipe cutting — ideal for retrofits or temporary measurement
- Best for: Retrofit metering without shutting down the line, large-diameter pipes where cutting is impractical
Vortex Flow Meters
Measures flow by counting vortices shed behind a bluff body inserted in the flow path — the shedding frequency is proportional to velocity.
- Accuracy: ±0.75–1%
- Works with: Liquids, gases, and steam — the most versatile of the three for non-conductive or gaseous media
- Installation: In-line, requires straight pipe runs upstream/downstream for accuracy
- Best for: Steam metering, compressed air, and applications with non-conductive fluids where electromagnetic meters won't work
