STP vs ETP: The Core Difference
The confusion between STP and ETP is one of the most common questions facility managers ask, and the answer comes down to one thing: what kind of wastewater you're treating.
An STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) treats domestic sewage — wastewater from toilets, kitchens, showers, and washing areas in residential complexes, offices, hotels, hospitals, and institutions. This water is relatively consistent in composition: organic matter, soaps, detergents, and human waste, measured mainly in BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand).
An ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) treats industrial wastewater generated by a manufacturing or processing facility. Unlike sewage, industrial effluent varies enormously by industry — a textile dyeing unit's effluent looks nothing like a pharmaceutical plant's, and both look nothing like an electroplating unit's. ETPs are almost always custom-designed around the specific pollutants an industry generates: heavy metals, dyes, oils, solvents, or high-strength organic loads.

How Do I Know Which One I Need?
The simple test: if your facility discharges only domestic-type wastewater (washrooms, kitchens, laundry) with no manufacturing process water mixed in, you need an STP. If any part of your wastewater comes from a manufacturing, processing, or chemical-use activity, you need an ETP — even if that facility also has domestic wastewater, which is often routed separately or combined depending on state pollution control board norms.
Many large industrial campuses run both: an STP for the office/canteen block and a separate ETP for the factory floor, sometimes converging at a common polishing stage before discharge.
